The climax of the tug-o-war in a very hard fought highland games season within the Grampian region will take place in Grantown on Spey on Sunday 26th August when the current leaders Elgin ‘A’ (39pts) will take on Cornhill ‘A’ (36pts).  Neither team was expected to manage to attend Ballater Games on Thursday, however the organisers and the sponsors were delighted when both managed to field a team.

The Scots Regiment also entered a team and performed excellently considering they were pulling in flat soled boots instead of the specialised ones used in the professional league.  Some disappointment was expressed from an element in the crowd that they were not pulling in their kilts this year.

It is noted that one of the rules of the competition is that all teams must be registered with  the SHGA, however this is not the case with at least one of the competitors who are included, This is not an issue as they are not in contention for any trophy or winnings.

The Grampian Games Tug-o-War League was pleased to welcome the StrathDee team into the league last season and to welcome it back this year with undiminished enthusiasm.  The 720kg professional 8 man team event is not for the faint hearted and draws a great following among the spectators.  Those close enough will hear the rope crack under the pressure of the two teams pulling with all of their collective might.

Our thanks to Geordie Catto for taking on the task of Coach for the Ballater based team and we wish them great success and enjoyment in the years ahead.
